— After being outscored 102-20 in their first three games of the season, Bellwood-Antis traveled to Indiana County on September 26, 1981 to finally win a ballgame. B-A vanquished Marion Center 34-14 on a warm Saturday afternoon 1:30 p.m. start, to get second-year coach John Hayes his first win after absorbing losses to Penns Valley (18-0), Tyrone (37-0) and Northern Cambria (47-20).
— The Blue Devils used a devastating two-prong offense consisting of senior Steve Walker and junior John Youngkin.
— Walker carried the pigskin 25 times and responded with 189 yards, including touchdown runs of three, 15 and 89 yards. Youngkin had his number called just seven times, but scampered for TD runs of 88 and 37 yards o his way to 195 yards rushing.
— Sophomore placekicker Tim Kovac punctuated four of the five scores with successful PAT kicks.
— The previously nonexistent Blue devil defense turned in a credible job in shackling Marion Center to just 100 yards total offense and denying the Yellow Jackets the endzone until B-A had a comfortable 20-0 lead, which they kept adding on to.
— It didn’t take long for the Williamsburg Blue Pirates to put a score on the board against Bellwood-Antis on September 26, 1969. That was the Pirates’ first points of the season after getting shut out three straight times, and the B-A defense wouldn’t allow them any more in a 36-8 Blue Devil win.
— In a battle of two winless schools, Bellwood-Antis used a punishing overland attack that amassed over 300 yards rushing to crack the victory column for the first time in 1969 for head coach Chet Dillen.
— B-A dug in and stopped another scoring attempt by Williamsburg on the BA-6, shifted gears and drove 94 yards for the tying score. Chris Edmondson sprinted 30 yards for the TD with just 2:24 left in the opening quarter and quarterback Bo DelGrosso tacked on the two-point PAT rush.
— The Blue Devil defense pilfered four Williamsburg passes and turned three of them into points.
— Ray Miller intercepted one in the second period to set the B-A up at the Pirate-30. Two plays later, DelGrosso hit Jeff Wilson with a 24-yard TD pitch and rushed for his second two-pointer.
— Minutes later, it was Todd Guyer intercepting a Williamsburg pass at the W-Burg-45. DelGrosso darted through the middle for the distance for the TD on the first call from scrimmage.
— With a 22-0 lead at halftime, Bellwood-Antis quickly rolled 51 yards to begin the third quarter for another TD. Guyer slammed in from the one for the six-pointer and a 28-0 lead.
— The Blue Devils final tally came following an interception by Mike Hoffer. Edmondson scored his second TD of the game blasting in from a yard away and then grabbed a two-point conversion pass from DelGrosso.
— Bellwood-Antis (3-1) handed highly-touted Jersey Shore their first loss of the season 18-6, on September 26, 1947, at Jersey Shore.
— Harold “Pete” Gleichert recovered a Bulldog fumble on Shore’s first series from scrimmage to set up a first-quarter score. Roy Pickens tossed a 13-yard pass to Harry Campbell, who along with Harold “Bus” Carr was a co--captain for Duke Burkholder for the touchdown.
— Jersey Shore came back to tie the score, taking advantage of a pass interception they returned to the BA-40.
— Late in the second quarter, the Blue Devils halted a Jersey Shore threat that carried to the BA-6 and promptly turned around and marched 94 yards to paydirt themselves. On the opening play of the drive, Pickens ran wide around the right end for a 20-yard scamper. Three plays later Pickens connected with Bob Sitman for a 55-yard TD pass that gave the Blue Devils a 12-6 halftime lead.
— In the fourth quarter, Gleichert came up with another Shore miscue, an interception this time at the BA-43. The Bulldogs held, but moved “out of the frying pan into the fire,” when Campbell intercepted a Jersey Shore pass attempt and loped 25 yards into the endzone for the final score of the game.
— Pickens carried 16 times for 100 yards and completed two of seven passes for another 73 yards and two scores.
